Truly, little makes me happier than to be a Pokémon gamer…

It’s such a wonderful community to be a part of, countless folks worldwide who’ve (largely - however, not encompassingly) grown up alongside the video games and their various franchise spin-offs (the trading card game, the television anime & its subsequent films, “manga” comic books, etc.) that - regardless of language barriers - can come together to bond over an ever-growing list of Japanese capsule goblins.

Likewise, the series - although a moneymaking giant today - nearly never made it to GameBoy screens due to funding cuts during the first paired titles’ development (creator Satoshi Tajiri made the admirable choice to forgo collecting a salary so as to fund the rest of his team; a true labor of love). Nowadays, the series is wildly across both Eastern and Western society and is becoming something that young parents can share with their children. The franchise recently celebrated its 15th anniversary; I’ve been a fan since autumn ‘99 when my mother purchased a GameBoy color, Pokémon Yellow version, and some Pokémon TCG booster packs for a then-upcoming vacation to Disney World (that was easily the best year of my childhood).

It’s always refreshing to socialize with other fans of the series and it’s fun to reminisce with those who view it nostalgically - having reached such ubiquity during its heyday, I know very few people my own age without some sort of affinity for it and indeed is it rare to meet someone from my generation who can claim to dislike or to have disliked the series - you couldn’t even say that about Harry Potter

Remember when the call to capture all 151 original Pocket Monsters was such an imposing task? They’re at 649 now, I’ve caught ‘em all (‘cept for the promotional creature, Meloetta, who has yet to debut in the USA) and I truly couldn’t be happier than to be a Pokémon gamer.

why have I never trained a Koffing/Weezing before?

The second big selling point for the Pokémon series in general is that Pokémon (the actual Pocket Monsters themselves) are awesome. I say that as a fully grown married man with two jobs and a relatively normal social life. I know that a lot of people in their twenties and younger associate Pokémon with “kids’ stuff,” and that’s understandable. The less-than-sophisticated accompanying Pokémon cartoon show and movies do a lot to further that notion. As a 34-year-old, I’m sort of oblivious to all that. Pokémon first came out when I was 18. I knew that kids liked it, but by then, I was too distanced from the world of children to fully associate Pokémon with being a kid. Instead, Pokémon was just Nintendo’s new turn-based RPG to me. It allowed for player-vs.-player combat, and player-with-player trading, which I thought was awesome. More importantly, it took place in a world that was one part EarthBound and one part Dragonball, but with characters that were one part Totoro and one part Godzilla, with a liberal dose of total insanity cast over it all. To this day, I’m still convinced that Squirtle is one of the most ingenious character designs ever. A turtle that squirts water with a squirrel tail, named Squirtle? Fucking amazing.

Destructiod review of Pokémon Black & White, 2010

anyone wanna trade me their female Regenerator Slowpoke for my female Marvel Scale Dratini?

The Sparkling Sea has been trolling me since the DW re-launched and I’m sick of it

Serebii forums re: glitches off the coast of Cinnabar Island

  • Hejiru: Seriously, Cinnabar coast is like the Bermuda Triangle of the Pokémon universe.
  • ToedAndTrue: Or even worse, the Jersey Shore of the Pokémon universe.

So, remember the guy on Route 7 that traded you an Emolga for your Boldore in BW? Seems he regrets the trade. He’s looking for an Emolga now and is giving away a Gigalith.

I finish the prologue to Lollipop Chainsaw only to find that Coro Coro scans (B2&W2) have finally leaked

what a happy morning to be a gamer (/ lover of colorful things)

  1. Lollipop Chainsaw is freakin’ awesome
  2. I would love to own a copy of one of the PokéPreview Coro Coro magazines to call my own - they are so different than American gaming magazines, really piques my fancy.

… and now for some things no one ever says: Attack Attack! edition brought to you by Pokémon Sapphire version.
